The Judge ruled in SASTRA's favor, regarding our petitions for a writ of mandate, based on Santa Ana's failure to comply with CEQA (The California Environmental Quality Act). The City of Santa Ana was ordered to set-aside (cancel) Ordinance No. NS-3072, thereby lifting the Short-Term Rental Ordinance Ban.
"A final judgment cannot be made until all legal issues have been resolved. Since SASTRA's Legal Nonconforming Use Issue is still pending (our next litigation step),
the CITY CANNOT APPEAL THE ABOVE DECISION.
Instead, the City of Santa Ana would need to ask the Court of Appeal for an extraordinary writ and request a stay of the trial court’s order. However, this is a very challenging process, as over 90% of such writ petitions are typically denied by the appellate courts."

Initial projections, suggest permitting our current short-term rentals would generate $15M+ in Annual Income for the city of Santa Ana. The STR revenue provides millions of dollars annually, to help fund affordable housing for lower income residents of Santa Ana.

Short-term rentals provide employment and support for local businesses, tradesmen and domestic maintenance services. The majority of STR Hosts in Santa Ana employee local property cleaners teams, gardeners, handyman, pool cleaners, plumbers, electricians, and subcontracts on a daily or weekly basis. STRs are a critical lifeline to the economic wellness of our community.

STR operators are invested in the preservation of their properties, and by extension, the neighborhoods in which their homes reside. Moreover, STR platforms like AirBNB and VRBO are able to attract billions of bookings each year because safeguards are in place to ensure that Hosts, their properties, and their guests, are of high quality.

Short-term rentals provide dynamic tourism spending throughout the City of Santa Ana. Our guests visit popular destinations like Bowers Museum, Discovery Cube OC and American Ninja Warrior Adventure Park, as they shop, eat, and spend through our community.

Short-term rentals provide an additional source of income to Santa Ana residents during challenging economic times. The ability for homeowners to home-share provides a financial lifeline to struggling families, single parents and retirees of our community.
Santa Ana Short Term Rental Alliance (SASTRA) is a host-homeowner organized and managed group advocating to structure proper short-term rental (STR) regulation, permitting and enforcement for the benefit of its hosts, guests, residents and tourism in Santa Ana.
It's our opinion Santa Ana’s STR Ordinance (Now Cancelled - 4/20/26) violates state and federal laws in numerous ways. The City Manager & Deputy City Attorney are providing our Council members with misinformation, which has led to misguided decisions regarding short-term rentals.
STRs have been operating in the city of Santa Ana with close to a 99% positive track record for 10+ years. Home sharing has already opened a swath of opportunity for the community, generating a domino effect of economic benefits and employment throughout the city. It is now time to bring our diverse, hard-working community together to create policies that work for all – while generating invaluable revenue for the city from STR taxes and permitting. A proper STR program for Santa Ana can have an enormously positive effect on affordable housing, neighborhood safety, and economic prosperity, while empowering the city to regulate against bad actors.
